STUDIO 2B FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Studio 2B?

STUDIO 2B is Girl Scouts for girls ages 11 - 17, and is a direct result of the New Directions for girls 11-17 research. Girls in STUDIO 2B are registered Girl Scouts, pay membership dues and accept the Girl Scout Promise and Law.

Can you explain the name STUDIO 2B?

How did we get it and how do we use it?
The name STUDIO 2B was developed through field testing hundreds of names with girls around the country. Ultimately, the appeal of STUDIO 2B to girls is that it connotes place and belonging, sounds sophisticated, and conveys a sense of mystery.

What happens to the terms Cadette & Senior?
The research revealed that the terms Cadette and Senior do not appeal to girls today. During this pilot period (October 2002 - October 2005) girls who identify with these names may continue to use them.

What about the three age groups?
The research verified that girls have very different developmental needs as they progress through the stages of adolescence. Girls 11-13, 13-15, and 15-17 sometimes want conversations and activities that focus on their specific interests, worries, and favorites. While they sometimes enjoy opportunities to be in their own peer group, at other times they can benefit from mixed-age gatherings. In STUDIO 2B girls can mix and match the resources, activities and groups to meet their needs.

How are Girl Scout Program Goals incorporated into STUDIO 2B?

Girls both in and out of Girl Scouts have had a hard time articulating what Girl Scouts is all about. It's Hard to belong to something that you can't put into words. During focus groups and on surveys, girls explored new ways to express the four goals that make up Girl Scouting.

The Four B's: Program Goals for Studio 2B members -

  • Become: Celebrate yourself today and become your best self in the future.
  • Belong: Be a part of a group where you have fun, relate to others with respect, and develop lasting friendships.
  • Believe: Develop your ideas and voice what is important to you.
  • Build: Take action on what you care about and make a difference. Note the 4B's are only for girls 11-17.

How will this affect council-sponsored program events and activities?

Over the upcoming year, program opportunities will gradually incorporate the STUDIO 2B language and messages into our program and events. By next fall (Sept. '03) program opportunities for the 11-17 age group will state that they are designed for a targeted age group or a mixed-age group. Keep an eye out for "STUDIO 2B Events," as soon as spring 2003.

How does the "By Girls, For Girls" part of STUDIO 2B work?
We are listening to a lot of girls - at every opportunity. We have already begun and will continue to listen as a part of the ongoing process. This is one way you can help! As adult advisors, you have much more contact with teens than council staff. Help us listen to teens by listening for us and then share (or ask the girls to share) with us what you have learned about those hopes and dreams ...and fears. Better yet, invite us to sit in on a chat session with your teens. We like to visit and we want to hear what the girls have to say!

When will the new resources be available?
The resources were previewed at the recent GSUSA National Convention. Our council has been able to obtain a couple of sets for planning and presentation purposes. They will be available from the council store soon. We have been favorably impressed with what we have seen so far and hope to be able to share more with you soon. What happens with the current Girl Scout resources for girls 11-17?
Consider the handbooks, interest projects, Issues for Girl Scouts booklets and all of the new STUDIO 2B resources as a menu of options. All of them are "real" Girl Scout materials, and all of the represent equally viable ways for girls to "do" Girl Scouts. Girls may choose how they want to mix and match resources to complement what they decide they want to do in STUDIO 2B groups and events.

Are the charms that girls earn with the STUDIO 2B Focus books official awards?
Yes! The charms are new earned awards. (They do not replace IP patches.) The charms were created in response to the research from girls that they are looking for fun, new ways to mark their accomplishments. Girls earn and collect charms when they complete the goals they establish for each Focus book.

Why is Girl Scouts changing.again?

The last major structural change to address the needs of preteens and teens in Girl Scouts was in the early 1960's, based on research conducted in the 1950's.
Keeping pace with the changing trends in society and preparing girls to do the same has been a cornerstone of Girl Scout Philosophy since the founding of the movement. Girl Scouts is dedicated to meeting the needs of each generation of girls- change is essential.
